Air New Zealand’s Skynest Economy Bunk Beds Now Available To Book From $290

Several years ago, Air New Zealand showed off the latest concept in airplane seating: lie-flat bunk beds in economy class.

The airline designed its Skynest product with its longest flights in mind. It’s set to launch into commercial service on the carrier’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner starting this winter, and it’s available to book now.

How To Book Air New Zealand’s ‘Skynest’

You can now book Air New Zealand’s one-of-a-kind Skynest. This unique innovation allows economy and premium economy passengers to purchase a block of time to lie fully flat in a sleep zone comprising 6 bunk-bed-style pods.

Skynest is being installed on the carrier’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in between the premium economy and economy cabins and will primarily be available on its longest flights, initially on the Auckland (AKL) to New York (JFK) route.

Economy and premium economy passengers who’d like to add some lie-flat rest can purchase a 4-hour block in one of the sleeping pods from $290 per flight. It’s hard to know exactly until we’ve checked it out for ourselves, but that seems like pretty good value.

While completing the booking process, you’ll be given the option to book your 4-hour session, choosing between ‘earlier’ and ‘later’. When exactly those sessions will be during the 16-hour flight isn’t specified.

You can even preselect which side you’d like to sleep on, and whether you’d prefer the top, middle, or bottom bunk.

Passengers can only book 1 single Skynest session per flight, and prices are displayed in New Zealand dollars.

As well as (hopefully) some proper sleep, passengers will have the following amenities at their disposal:

Fresh pillows, sheets, a blanket, and a seatbelt
USB-A and USB-C power outlets, a reading light, air conditioning vents, and a privacy curtain
Ambient lighting and an amenity kit that contains an eye mask, socks, earplugs, various skincare products, and a dental kit
