I was excited to visit Bucharest, Romania, for 2 nights in March 2026 at the tail-end of a girls trip. I was interested in learning more about the history of where several of my great-grandparents emigrated from, and having one of Europe’s largest wellness spas nearby didn’t hurt, either. The JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel seemed easily accessible for what we were interested in seeing as first-time visitors, and I am always excited about a property with an executive lounge.
Steeped in history, the hotel was originally planned as an auxiliary building to complement the nearby Parliament Palace. Construction began in the 1980s to house VIP guests for dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and was completed after the fall of communism in 1989. It opened as a Marriott hotel in 2000, and rooms were last renovated in 2019, with the first floor recently renovated for the hotel’s 25th anniversary in 2025.
With some of the most spacious rooms in the city, would we find a property just as ideal for tourists as for business travelers? I’ll review several of the room types, on-site dining, the amazing lounge, and property amenities, as well as the pros and cons of a stay at the JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel.
Booking JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel
The cash rate for the standard deluxe room at JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel for my March 2026 stay was $158 per night (before taxes and fees). We were hosted in a “Grand Executive Room, Larger Guest room, 2 Double, Sofa bed, High floor” room, which was $284 per night during our stay. That’s a significant increase in rates to add on lounge access, but I noticed the gap varied widely by room type on different nights. When reviewing rooms, consider whether all-day refreshments in the lounge (with premium rooms) are worth the expense compared to adding breakfast to the base room rate.
The deluxe room cost an average of 33,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night for the same dates. This property would be ideal for the 35,000-point free night award, a benefit of the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card and Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card.
Location
The JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel is located on Dealul Spirii (Spirii Hill), across from the Palace of Parliament and People’s Salvation Cathedral. While it may look like a short walk to the Palace of Parliament, walking to the tour entrance took us about 20 minutes because you have to walk along the fence to the proper entry gate.
Our free walking tour and day trip bus tour to Dracula’s Castle, Peles Castle, and Brasov departed from various points in Old Town. The hotel is much further afoot (over a 30-minute walk) from this area, though we found catching a bus or rideshare easy enough.
The property is around a 40-minute drive from Therme Bucharest, Europe’s largest indoor thermal spa and wellness center. Because of Therme’s proximity to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP), it may make more sense to visit on your arrival or departure day.
We departed from OTP, and the rideshare was around $15 and took us around 30 minutes, but note that this time can vary greatly with traffic.
Executive Grand Room
Our Executive Grand Room was grand indeed, with ample square footage in an elongated layout. In some respects, more space is always great to have, but there were some missed opportunities in our room for functional use. For example, the 2 queen beds shared 1 nightstand, 1 lamp, and 1 spare outlet, though there was space on the exterior sides of the beds for additional nightstands or dressers with more lighting and outlets. The TV also felt incredibly undersized given the available wall space for a larger screen. And the wall space could have been utilized even further for a dresser or bench.
The rear of the room featured a desk with a rolling chair, a sofa bed, an armchair, and a window with a picturesque view of the cathedral. The closet area was huge — the leftmost side had a fully stocked minibar with items for purchase, as well as the coffee and tea service. The regular closet had open shelves and drawers, plenty of hangers, an iron, an ironing board, a safe, robes, and slippers.
Bathroom
The vanity had a single sink, with a bathtub with a shower to the left and a shower stall and toilet to the right. This type of suite would be ideal for families, and having the handheld shower at the tub would be great for bathing kids.
The bathrooms were not renovated in 2019; instead, the pale greenish marble was reconditioned but not replaced. While the marble is unique, the wall tiles made the bathroom appear dated.
A Peek at the Business, Executive, and Presidential Suites
The upgrade opportunities for Marriott Bonvoy elites are robust, as the property offers 5 nonsuite room types and 6 suite types. I was given a tour of the Business Suite, Executive Suite, and Presidential Suite.
Business Suite
The Business Suite would be ideal for hosting meetings, clients, or coworkers without having to reserve meeting space separately. There is a standalone conference room that seats 10, a dining area with a minibar, a desk, a living room, and a separate bedroom.
Executive Suite
The Executive Suite features a living room with a work area separate from the bedroom, plus 2 TVs.
Presidential Suite
The Presidential Suite is the top-tier suite, offering over 1,600 square feet of space. It has a substantial living room with lounge space, a dining table for 10, a desk area, a private bedroom, and a full kitchen. The expansive views out to the cathedral were stunning.
Executive Lounge
The Executive Lounge was an exclusive retreat that would be worth the investment, particularly for a family or business traveler who would be on-site for multiple meals. The lounge is accessible to premium room and suite guests, as well as Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite, and Ambassador Elite members (plus 1 guest staying in the same room, excluding children). It is located on the eighth floor and opens early and closes late, with specific food services at these times:
- Breakfast: 6:30 to 10:30 a.m.
- Tea time: 3 to 5:30 p.m.
- Evening hors d’oeuvres (happy hour): 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
- Open bar (beer, wine, sparkling wine): 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Seating
There was plenty of seating to choose from, including dining tables, sofa nooks, grouped seats, and high-tops. We visited the lounge throughout multiple day parts and always found that it had enough space to accommodate guests without feeling cramped. It was a comfortable, relaxing oasis in a busy, cold city.
Breakfast
Breakfast offered a variety of baked goods, cereals, nuts, yogurts, smoked fish, cold cuts, cheeses, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Hot items included bacon, sausage, potatoes, grilled vegetables, scrambled eggs, hard-boiled eggs, and eggs Benedict. Chilled wine, milk, juice, water, and sodas were available.
Happy Hour
The happy hour was easily a full dinner service. Cold items included octopus salad, hummus, shrimp salad, a blue cheese and spinach tart, cold cuts and cheeses, salad items, and mini desserts. Hot items included lamb chops, seafood, and risotto. Wine, beer, juice, water, and Pepsi sodas were offered, including Romanian wines and beer.
Breakfast at JW Steakhouse
We dined at JW Steakhouse on our second morning. The restaurant serves a breakfast buffet from 6:30 to 11 a.m. If not included in the nightly rate, the breakfast buffet would have been 145 Romanian leu ($33) per person.
The spread here was unlike anything else. It had smoked fish, a salad bar, cold cuts and cheeses, a Romanian corner (with traditional cheeses, pickled items, and eggplant salad), cut and whole fruits, cereals, breads and baked goods, and a gluten-free area. Fresh juices, water, coffee, and tea were available.
From the hot buffet, there were waffles, pancakes, beef and pork sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, hard-boiled eggs, eggs Benedict, eggs made to order, beans, grilled vegetables, and roasted potatoes to choose from.
We arrived quite late for breakfast, close to the end time, and the team was still keeping everything fresh and stocked, which I appreciated. While we were not shuffled on our way at closing time, our server offered my guest a final coffee refill in a to-go cup, which was thoughtful.
JW Steakhouse is open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and for dinner Monday to Saturday from 6 to 11 p.m. The menu leans heavily on beef and seafood, and it is the only restaurant in Romania certified to serve Kobe beef.
Other Dining Options
Other on-site dining options include:
- Champions – The American Sports Bar & Restaurant: Open Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.
- Cucina – The Italian Kitchen: Open Monday to Saturday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. for lunch and 6 to 11 p.m. for dinner, with dinner service also on Sunday
- JW Bakery: Open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Olea: This outdoor Mediterranean/Middle Eastern concept is open seasonally from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.
- Pavilion Lounge: The lobby lounge is open daily from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m.
- Vienna Lounge: Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Property Amenities
The ground level houses a casino and Grand Avenue shopping with many high-end retailers. The inviting lobby features 2 sweeping staircases that lead from the ground to the first floor, where the restaurants, ballrooms, and meeting rooms are located. Behind the left set of stairs, you’ll find the “Under the Stairs” seating area, for those who need a quieter, more private space. A small business center with computers and printers is near the check-in desks.
The subground level is where the THAIco SPA Grand and World Class Health Academy are located. World Class operates the hotel’s fitness center and indoor pool, and it also has its own spa. It was a very large operation, and my read was that it was very busy with members, not hotel guests. During my morning and afternoon visits, the pool had several lap lessons scheduled, making it less relaxing.
Final Thoughts
The JW Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel is a pretty fantastic property, and when my biggest suggestion for improvement is more furniture or decor to fill an oversized room, that seems like an OK problem to have.
The Executive Lounge, open to select elites and guests in premium rooms and suites, is an excellent retreat from the bustle of the city. Having a quality breakfast and refreshments available throughout the day in a comfortable environment was a real treat.
Being outside the Old Town area means the property lacks some of the old-world charm and walkability to popular tourist sites and dining options, but I found it easy enough to walk, bus, or rideshare to the area when I wanted to. Spacious rooms and the lounge are reason enough for me to return to the JW again!
