Citi Confirms It’s Stopped Taking Applications for the Citi Custom Cash Card

Update:

After publishing this article, Citi provided a statement: “Citi is no longer accepting applications for the Citi Custom Cash Card product as of May 28, 2026. This change reflects Citi’s ongoing focus on managing and evolving its product portfolio. Consumers who are interested in a cash back product are welcome to apply for Citi’s award-winning Double Cash Card. Existing Citi Custom Cash cardmembers are not impacted and can continue to use their card and enjoy its benefits,” said a Citi spokesperson.”

If you’ve been sitting on the fence about applying for the Citi Custom Cash® Card, you may want to make that call sooner rather than later.

A credible rumor is sweeping the internet, saying that Citi plans to pull the card from new applications by the end of this week. While nothing has been officially confirmed, the source behind this rumor has a track record that makes this worth taking seriously.

Since nothing is official yet, let’s take a look at what we know and don’t know about the Citi Custom Cash card rumors.

The Citi Custom Cash Card Rumor and Why It Has Weight

The tip originated on the Reddit community r/CreditCards, where a Reddit user named Karanel posted that the Citi Custom Cash card would be “gone by the end of the week.” Anonymous Reddit rumors are usually easy to dismiss, but this one is different.

This is the same user who accurately predicted the discontinuation of the Citi Rewards+® Card before it happened — a call that proved correct. That card was eventually replaced with the Citi Strata℠ Card.

Adding to the intrigue: Over the past 24 hours, the Citi Custom Cash card has been disappearing and reappearing from various pages on Citi’s website — the kind of inconsistency that tends to happen in the background when a product is about to be retired. According to internal documents reportedly distributed to bank branch managers, the card is set to be removed from new customer acquisition channels starting May 29, 2026, as part of Citi’s ongoing portfolio management.

We reached out to Citi for comment but did not receive a reply before publishing. That’s not unusual, though. Issuers rarely confirm this kind of news ahead of an official announcement. And that’s exactly the issue: By the time Citi says anything publicly, the application page may already be gone. That’s too late for anyone who wants to apply when they find out the card is going away.

Since launching in June 2021, the Citi Custom Cash card has been a favorite among cash-back enthusiasts. It earns 5% back on your top eligible spending category each billing cycle — automatically, with no activation needed — on up to $500 in purchases, plus 1% back on everything else. You get all of that with a $0 annual fee. It’s a simple, effective card that pairs well with the broader Citi ThankYou ecosystem.

What About Existing Cardholders?

Applications may stop being accepted as soon as May 29. Existing cardholders are reportedly unaffected, according to this rumor. Cards, rewards, and benefits should continue as normal, and applications already in progress should still be processed.

We don’t know whether Citi intends to force a product change for existing cardholders down the road (as it did with the Citi Rewards+ card). Alternatively, the card could simply be closed to new applicants while existing accounts carry on indefinitely. That’s what we’ve seen with the Citi Prestige® Card

Final Thoughts

This is still a rumor; that’s worth remembering. But given the source’s credibility and the unusual activity on Citi’s website, it deserves more than a shrug.

If the Citi Custom Cash card has been on your radar, applying before the end of the week is a reasonable precaution. If the rumor turns out to be wrong, you’ve picked up a solid no-annual-fee card a bit earlier than you originally planned. If the rumor proves true, you’ll be glad you didn’t wait for official confirmation — missing out on this card in the process.
