Chicago is one of the best cities in the world for a summer vacation (the keyword here being summer). Balmy, breezy, and filled with events and activities, it has something for everyone during the warmer months.
This is exactly why I chose to take a staycation in the city in July 2026, bringing my family (both old and young) from the Chicago suburbs into the city for a day and night out on the town. As a Hyatt Discoverist always looking to maintain or upgrade my Hyatt status, I decided to book a couple of rooms at Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile, a hotel in the River North area.
WeI had an excellent stay at the hotel, but there are a few things to know before booking and staying that can help make your trip a success. Here’s what you need to know about a stay at Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile.
1. Use a Free Night Award
I was able to use the annual Category 1-4 free night certificate from The World of Hyatt Credit Card to book a room at Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile because it’s a Category 4 property. I got especially good value using the free night award in the summer, which is peak season in Chicago. The card also delivers automatic Discoverist status, which gets me perks like 2 p.m. checkout and room upgrades.
Cash rates ranged from $387 to $414 per night for standard high-floor rooms, and points rates ranged from 15,000 to 20,000 points in July, so I saved a lot by using my free night awards.
2. Ideal Location for Repeat Visitors
I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, spending weekends in the city exploring its top cultural attractions and famous landmarks. I think a stay in the River North/Streeterville area, specifically at Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile, is best for second-time or repeat visitors who want to dine and drink along the river, explore the city’s more northern neighborhoods, and be slightly farther away from the business-district feel of the Loop.
This doesn’t mean the hotel isn’t close to tourist attractions. It is just a few blocks away on foot from Ohio Street Beach, Navy Pier, the Chicago Riverwalk, the 360 Observation Deck at the John Hancock Center, and the Wendella Boat Tours dock.
Still, if you’d rather visit the most popular Chicago attractions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Buckingham Fountain, the Willis Tower Skydeck, Millennium Park, and Cloud Gate (affectionately known by locals as the Bean), it may be better to stay farther south or in the Loop at a property like Kimpton Gray Hotel, Hyatt Centric The Loop Chicago, or Hyatt Regency Chicago.
3. Cute, Comfortable, and Quiet
Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile wasn’t a luxury hotel, but it was certainly comfortable, and I had a very pleasant stay. My recently renovated room had inviting mood lighting, a large TV (perfect for catching the end of FIFA World Cup games before bed), and cozy bedding.
The room was pretty large and included amenities like 2 free water bottles, a safe, and a coffee maker (though I definitely would have preferred a Nespresso machine).
The decor and lighting were art deco, which seemed accurate given the city’s history and architectural styles, which feature sleek lines and bold geometric shapes. I also liked the pink velvet chair, green headboard, and wooden vertical-line wall decor, which made the room feel modern and fun.
Although the shower was a bit dated (like a bathroom at someone’s home or apartment, with an older tub and shower curtain), the sink area and lighting were updated, with a massive mirror.
The BeeKind bath amenities weren’t anything special, but they were fine for a day and featured a mild honey-and-red-clover scent.
The bed was extremely comfortable, with lots of pillows and soft bedding. Most importantly, the hotel was quiet, and although the neighboring rooms seemed occupied, I didn’t hear much at all and got a restful sleep, also in part thanks to the blackout curtains.
Although the view wasn’t too exciting, the room had a large window that let in a decent amount of natural light, even though it was hazy and foggy during my stay.
Bottom Line:
My room at Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile was stylish and comfortable, offering a solid night’s sleep, which is everything I want during a quick 1-night hotel stay.
4. Huge Lobby Ideal for Hanging Out
Although I don’t usually spend much time in the hotel lobby, this one was ideal for lingering. The hotel entrance was on the ground floor, which had a small foyer and a Starbucks. The actual hotel lobby was on the second floor.
When the elevator doors opened, I noticed a small check-in area next to a stand with complimentary water, along with a small sitting and work area. The work area even had a microwave and printer, which could be useful for longer stays, plus a small seating area with a TV where you could hang out.
To the left, the lobby opened into a large seating area with different seating options and spaces dotted with art, library books, and sculptures, some of which felt semiprivate thanks to dividers.
The lobby area sort of melded into the bar area, which had lots of seating and 3 large TVs. It was the perfect place to watch the World Cup games after dinner, and I noticed people using the lobby for different activities: having a drink with friends, working on laptops, watching TV, or just relaxing. Finally, the space opened into The Bridge restaurant, where you could have lunch, dinner, or the breakfast buffet ($32 per person plus tax, or you could order à la carte).
This would be a great space for large families or groups traveling together to meet and hang out before and after exploring Chicago’s highlights.
Another thing I liked was that to reach the room floors, you had to go up a second, separate set of elevators, which were activated by tapping your key card. Had I been staying alone, I would have appreciated this even more for safety reasons.
5. Fun Indoor Pool and Hot Tub
Considering Chicago’s harsh and long winters, an indoor pool is an excellent idea, and Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile has one. The pool also featured a hot tub and was next to a large fitness center.
My original plan was to spend the afternoon at Ohio Street Beach, dipping into the refreshing waters of Lake Michigan. But Chicago weather can be wild, and even though the day before was extremely hot, the day I stayed was foggy and cool — the opposite of enjoyable beach weather. The indoor pool and hot tub saved the day for my family and me, as my 5-year-old was looking forward to a swim.
Although the pool wasn’t massive (and had too much chlorine), we had a great time splashing around and playing, with recovery time in the hot tub afterward. I never imagined an indoor pool would be welcome in the summer, but Chicago’s weather is moody, and it ended up being a welcome amenity during my stay. I know I’d love it on a freezing February day, too.
Final Thoughts
If you’re visiting Chicago for the second time or don’t mind being slightly further north of the Loop, consider a stay at Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile, especially if you have a free night certificate from Hyatt, which will make your stay much more affordable. The hotel is comfortable, with stylish, cozy spaces and amenities such as an indoor pool and a large lobby that can make your stay even better.
